What Punta Rucia is known for
Punta Rucia is a small beach village on the north-west coast, and almost everyone who goes there is either staying at one of the low-rise beach hotels or catching a boat to Cayo Arena — a sandbank in the middle of the bay, sometimes called Paradise Island, that is one of the more low-key day-trip destinations on this coast compared with the boat excursions further east. The road runs west from Santiago through Puerto Plata province and then along the coast, so plan for 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the hour and the state of the coastal stretch. If you are catching a boat, tell us the departure time — most Cayo Arena trips leave in the morning — and we work the pickup backwards from that instead of from your flight landing time alone.
